Activated from COVID list
Mercilus was activated from the reserve/COVID-19 list on Wednesday, Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle reports.
Analysis: Mercilus missed the last two games of the regular season after landing on the team's reserve/COVID-19 list. The linebacker racked up 21 tackles (12 solo), five sacks and three forced fumbles this season.

Positive test confirmed
Mercilus was placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list Saturday following a positive test for the virus, Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle reports.
Analysis: Mercilus won't play in Sunday's game against the Bengals. Depending on when he tested positive for the virus, Mercilus may not play in next week's game against the Titans, either. Jonathan Greenard and Jacob Martin are candidates to take over as a starting outside linebacker, although both players should get plenty of tread until Mercilus returns.

Lands on COVID list
Mercilus (undisclosed) was placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list Friday, Sarah Barshop of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: The move means Mercilus either tested positive for the virus or is a high-risk close contact of an infected individual. Jonathan Greenard should have an increased defensive role while Mercilus is sidelined.

Will play Sunday
Mercilus will return to the lineup for Sunday's game against the Browns, Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle reports.
Analysis: Mercilus missed Week 9's win over the Jaguars while sitting on the reserve COVID-19 list. He did not contract the virus but was determined to be in close contact with Jacob Martin, who tested positive. Mercilus started the season slowly but has picked up in recent weeks. He has three sacks and four quarterback hits with one sack nullified by a penalty over his last four games played.

Returns from COVID list
Mercilus (undisclosed) was activated from the reserve/COVID-19 list Tuesday, Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle reports.
Analysis: The 30-year-old was placed on the COVID-19 list last week as a close contact of the COVID-positive Jacob Martin, but he's now back on the active roster after clearing the league protocols. Mercilus has three sacks through seven games and should reclaim his starting role at outside linebacker for the Texans.

Hits COVID list
The Texans placed Mercilus on the reserve/COVID-19 list Thursday, Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle reports.
Analysis: Mercilus was placed on the list due to coming into close contact with Jacob Martin, who tested positive for the virus Thursday. Mercilus will need to reside on the list for at least five days, meaning he won't be available for Sunday's game against Jacksonville. In his stead, Jonathan Greenard, Brennan Scarlett and Kyle Emanuel (concussion) would be in line to handle outside linebacker duties for the contest.

Records sack in win
Mercilus had one tackle, a sack and recovered a fumble in Sunday's 30-14 win over the Jaguars.
Analysis: The fumble recovery was Mercilus' first of the season and led to the Texans' final points. He has just 13 tackles over five games, but Mercilus has three sacks the last two weeks.

Takes down QB twice
Mercilus recorded four tackles (two solo) and two sacks in Sunday's 31-23 loss to the Vikings.
Analysis: Mercilus got off to a slow start this season with no sacks and no quarterback pressures through the first three games, but it appears he may have shaken off the rust Sunday, although Kirk Cousins has been sacked on 9.1 percent of his dropbacks -- the fifth-highest frequency in the league. We know this is in Mercilus' arsenal, though, as he's coming off a 7.5-sack season in 2019. He'll set his sights on Gardner Minshew and the Jaguars in Week 5, which should be another favorable matchup.

Records first tackle for loss
Mercilus had four tackles, one for a loss, in Sunday's 28-21 loss to the Steelers.
Analysis: Mercilus has been quiet to open the season. Sunday's tackle for a loss was his first of the season, and he's yet to register a quarterback hit. Mercilus signed a four-year contract extension during the offseason, so more is expected of him.

Minimal impact in playoff loss
Mercilus had one tackle and one quarterback hit in Sunday's 51-31 playoff loss to the Chiefs.
Analysis: Mercilus ended what is considered a successful season on a down note, as did the rest of the Houston defense which at one point allowed seven consecutive touchdown drives to Kansas City. He played a full 16-game schedule for the second straight season and proved himself a worthy successor to Jadeveon Clowney on the edge. Mercilus had 48 tackles, 7.5 sacks, two interceptions, four forced fumbles and one fumble recovery. All that production earned him four additional years, so he'll patrol the…read more

Makes impact in playoff win
Mercilus recorded four tackles, one sack, three quarterback hits and forced a fumble in Saturday's 22-19 overtime win over the Bills in an AFC wild-card playoff game.
Analysis: Early in the fourth quarter, Mercilus dislodged the ball from quarterback Josh Allen, which was recovered by teammate Jacob Martin and set up Houston's second score in its comeback victory. It was the fifth forced fumble of the year for Mercilus, who has thrived in the role once held by Jadeveon Clowney.

Secures four more years
Mercilus signed a four-year, $54 million contract extension with $24.5 million guaranteed with the Texans on Saturday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Analysis: The Texans have counted on Mercilus this season following the trade of Jadeveon Clowney to Seattle and J.J. Watt (pectoral) landing on IR. Mercilus has answered the call, recording 48 tackles, 7.5 sacks -- his highest total since 2016 -- and four forced fumbles. The 2012 first-round pick will avoid free agency in March, as he's locked down through the 2023 season.
