Early edge in QB competition
Given his experience and familiarity with the Seahawks offense, Smith has an early edge on Drew Lock in the team's ongoing quarterback competition, Gregg Bell of the Seattle News Tribune reports.
Analysis: Offensive coordinator Shane Waldron acknowledged that there's "a long time to go" before a final call is made on the team's Week 1 starting QB, but unless the team makes a move for another signal caller, Russell Wilson's replacement will be either Smith or Lock. Per Waldron, "right now, Geno has done such a good job of carrying over (the offensive principles from 2021). He already had a head start over Drew right there." That said, Waldron noted that he likes Lock's "ability to make every throw…read more

Competing for starting job
Smith is expected to compete with Drew Lock and Jacob Eason for the starting quarterback job after the Seahawks didn't select a quarterback in the 2022 NFL Draft, Michael-Shawn Dugar of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: The Seahawks decided to use all nine of their draft picks to reinforce other positions, signaling that they're content with letting Smith, Lock and, to a lesser extent, Eason battle for the starting job this summer. Smith, 32, played four games (three starts) while Russell Wilson was rehabbing a finger injury last season. He won just one game and completed 68.4 percent of his passes for 702 yards (7.4 YPA), five touchdowns and an interception while adding another 42 yards and a score on the…read more

Has contract reworked
The NFL disapproved the contract Smith signed with the Seahawks on April 14, but the issue was amended Tuesday, and the new terms were approved Wednesday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: Per Rapoport, Smith will have a base salary of $3.5 million in 2022, with the potential for $3.5 million more in incentives. The 31-year-old is a candidate to replace Russell Wilson as the starting quarterback after Seattle dealt the franchise signal-caller to Denver back in March. As a part of that trade, the Seahawks received Drew Lock, and the team still could add to the quarterback room this offseason via the draft or another acquisition. As it stands, Smith has the most experience in the…read more

Back with Seahawks
The Seahawks have re-signed Smith, Bob Condotta of The Seattle Times reports.
Analysis: Per Condotta, Smith's one-year deal with Seattle carries a base value in the $4 million range, plus incentives. Now that he's back in the fold, Smith bolsters a QB group that also currently includes Drew Lock and Jacob Eason. It's still possible that the Seahawks could add a veteran option such as Baker Mayfield or draft a signal-caller later this month, but for now Smith figures to have a chance to compete for the vacated starting spot created by the offseason trade of Russell Wilson.

Arrested on suspicion of DUI
Smith was arrested Monday in King County, Wash. on suspicion of DUI, Brady Henderson of ESPN.com reports. "Geno is fully cooperative with the investigation. I hope that an open mind can be kept by all as the facts are ascertained," Smith's attorney Jon Fox said in a statement regarding the incident.
Analysis: Smith was arrested at 2:10 a.m. local time and released from a King County correctional facility at 9:27 a.m. on his personal recognizance. Head coach Pete Carroll relayed that Smith was present at the Seahawks facility later Monday to take part in end-of-season meetings, so the team will presumably leave it to the NFL to decide whether the 31-year-old quarterback is subject to a fine and/or suspension. Smith, who is set to become an unrestricted free agent in March, appeared in four games…read more

Returns to practice
Smith (back) practiced in full Saturday, John Boyle of the Seahawks' official site reports.
Analysis: Smith picked up the injury Friday, though he made a quick recovery. He should be prepared to serve as the Seahawks' backup quarterback in Week 12 against Washington.

Picks up back injury
Smith missed Friday's practice with a back injury, John Boyle of the Seahawks' official site reports.
Analysis: Smith practiced in full Thursday, which is apparently when he suffered the injury. Saturday's practice report will be telling for his Week 12 availability, but if he can't go, the Seahawks will turn to Jacob Eason as their backup quarterback.

Returns to No. 2 role
Smith will serve as the backup quarterback behind starter Russell Wilson (finger) in Sunday's game against the Packers after the latter was activated from injured reserve Friday, John Boyle of the Seahawks' official site reports.
Analysis: Smith started the last three contests in place of Wilson, who missed the first games of his career after suffering an injury to his right middle finger Oct. 7 that required surgery. At the time he underwent surgery, Wilson was expected to be sidelined for roughly six weeks, but the eight-time Pro Bowler healed quicker than anticipated and performed well enough in practice this week for Seattle to sign off on him playing. Wilson's return should represent a boon to the Seattle offense and all its…read more

Highly efficient in win
Smith completed 20 of 24 passes for 195 yards and two touchdowns in Sunday's 31-7 win over the Jaguars. He also rushed twice for eight yards and a score.
Analysis: In his third consecutive start, Smith notched his first win since the 2017 season when he was playing for the Jets, and he completed 83 percent of his passes with 8.1 yards per attempt in the process. This was easily Smith's best showing of the season, as he totaled 376 passing yards and two touchdowns over his previous two starts. It's still unclear whether Russell Wilson (finger) will return after the bye week for a Week 10 matchup against the Packers.

Unable to get offense going
Smith completed 12 of 22 pass attempts for 167 yards and a touchdown in Monday's 13-10 loss to the Saints.
Analysis: Smith got off to a great start when he placed a perfect deep ball to hit DK Metcalf in stride for an 84-yard touchdown in the first quarter, but that's pretty much where his effectiveness ended. The veteran backup did protect the football and kept Seattle in the contest until its last drive, but he was promptly sacked twice (five times overall), ending any chance of a heroic comeback. Smith does have a favorable matchup against Jacksonville on tap for Week 8, but the lack of upside makes him a…read more

Late comeback falls short
Smith completed 23 of 32 pass attempts for 209 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 23-20 overtime loss to the Steelers.
Analysis: Smith got his first start with Seattle in place of the injured Russell Wilson (finger), and the results were mixed. The 31-year-old struggled mightily in the first half, failing to lead the Seahawks to any points before halftime. The veteran got things rolling in the second half to bring his team back to a tie at the end of regulation, but it was his lost fumble that led to the game-deciding field goal by Chris Boswell. Overall, the passing offense took an expected dip under Smith, and there…read more

Starting opportunity likely coming
Smith is in line to step in as Seattle's starting quarterback beginning with the team's Week 6 game at Pittsburgh with Russell Wilson (finger) expected to be sidelined for at least a month, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: After exiting Thursday's loss to the Rams, the ultra-durable Wilson was diagnosed with a ruptured middle finger tendon on his right hand, an injury that will likely keep him out for anywhere from a month to 6-to-8 weeks. Seattle may look to the trade market or free agency for another veteran replacement, but for now, Smith looks set to quarterback a team with legitimate playoff aspirations for the first time in his nine-year career. Smith acquitted himself reasonably well while filling in for…read more

Solid work in emergency duty
Smith entered the Seahawks' 26-17 loss to the Rams on Thursday night in place of Russell Wilson (finger) with 14:42 remaining and completed 10 of 17 passes for 131 yards with a touchdown and an interception.
Analysis: Smith immediately caught the Rams' attention by leading the Seahawks on a 10-play, 98-yard scoring march that he capped off with a 23-yard touchdown pass to DK Metcalf to bring Seattle within two points at the time. After Los Angeles countered with a touchdown drive, Smith was able to get his squad into field-goal range and keep matters interesting until he threw an interception on the first play of his third possession, one that seemed to be at least partly the result of intended receiver…read more

Likely out Saturday
Smith was not spotted warming up prior to Saturday's preseason game against the Broncos and is not likely to play, Gregg Bell of The Tacoma News Tribune reports.
Analysis: Smith cleared concussion protocol Friday so is available to play. However, it makes sense that the team would take no chances with his health, as he's expected to serve as the team's backup quarterback come the regular season. Alex McGough and Sean Mannion are slated to see the majority of the time under center in this contest.

Clears concussion protocol
Smith (concussion) has cleared the league's mandated protocols, Bob Condotta of The Seattle Times reports.
Analysis: Smith suffered a concussion in the Seahawks' preseason opener against the Raiders. However, his quick clearance through the league's protocols will allow him to be available for Saturday's matchup with the Broncos. He currently projects to back up Russell Wilson under center in 2021.

Goes out with concussion
Smith suffered a concussion in the first half of Saturday's preseason game against the Raiders and did not return, according to NFL.com.
Analysis: Smith started the exhibition contest and got off 10 passes, but he was not able to continue after going down with the head injury. He will need to clear the league's concussion protocol before returning to action.

Re-signs with Seahawks
Smith has re-signed with the Seahawks.
Analysis: Smith has backed up Russell Wilson for the past two seasons, a role that he'll reprise in 2021. While working behind Wilson, who's been durable as a pro, Smith has made just one regular-season appearance for Seattle, in a blowout win over the Jets last year.

Gets into one game in 2020
Smith played one game for the Seahawks in 2020 and completed four of five passes for 33 yards.
Analysis: Russell Wilson hasn't missed a game since entering the league, so Smith has been called upon just once over his two-year stint with the team, as he took the field in a Week 14 blowout win over the Jets. The 30-year-old quarterback will be an unrestricted free agent in March.

Closes out blowout win
Smith completed four of five passes for 33 yards in Sunday's 40-3 win over the Jets.
Analysis: Smith took the field for the first time since 2018, as Russell Wilson was rested in the fourth quarter after generating a comfortable lead. He was predictably rusty, getting sacked once and botching a snap. The 30-year-old only threw short passes, too. It was nevertheless important to get Wilson's backup some work before the postseason begins.

Agrees to deal with Seahawks
Smith agreed to a one-year contract with the Seahawks on Thursday, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Smith rejoins the team that employed him as a backup last season, though the assignment resulted in no snaps during the 2019 regular season. He should presumably return to that role, though undrafted rookie Anthony Gordon may also get a look in training camp.

No snaps in 2019
Smith didn't play an offensive snap for the Seahawks in 2019.
Analysis: Russell Wilson hasn't missed a game since entering the league in 2012, and he continued that trend in 2019. That left Smith on the sidelines for the full season. Smith last started a game in 2017 for the Giants. Overall in his career, he's completed 57.7 percent of passes for 6,182 yards, 29 touchdowns and 36 interceptions while rushing for 661 yards and seven scores. The 29-year-old will be an unrestricted free agent in March.
