Registers 18 yards
Burton caught three of four targets for 18 yards in Sunday's 28-24 loss to the Steelers.
Analysis: Burton was back in the No. 2 tight end role in Week 16, as he played 49 percent of the team's snaps on offense, second to position mate Jack Doyle (55 percent). Nevertheless, the 29-year-old is stuck in a cold spell with just five receptions for 37 yards over the last four contests. He'll look to get back on track in the Week 17 matchup against the Jaguars.

Produces one reception
Burton caught one of two targets for eight yards in Sunday's 27-20 win over the Texans.
Analysis: Burton finished third among Colts' tight ends with just 19 snaps on offense (35 percent). The position group hasn't had much success lately, however, as Burton, Jack Doyle and Mo Alie-Cox have all finished with fewer than 50 receiving yards in four straight games.

All clear Thursday
Burton (knee) was a full participant during Thursday's practice.
Analysis: Burton was absent from Wednesday's session with the knee issue, but as evidenced by this news, he appears on track for Sunday's game against Houston. Although the veteran played 25 of 61 offensive snaps in last week's win over Las Vegas, it was a bit surprising to see Burton go without a target in the contest. Burton will continue to be a hit-or-miss option at tight end in fantasy in his No. 2 role behind Jack Doyle for Week 15.

Absent from practice
Burton didn't practice Wednesday due to a knee injury.
Analysis: Though Burton played 25 of the Colts' 61 offensive snaps in this past Sunday's 44-27 win over the Raiders, he wasn't targeted in the contest. Following two straight fantasy duds, Burton -- who scored touchdowns in both Week 11 and Week 12 -- profiles as a hit-or-miss option this weekend against the Texans, if available.

Garners no Week 14 targets
Burton fielded 25 offensive snaps without receiving a target during Sunday's 44-27 win against Las Vegas.
Analysis: Burton's nine-game catch streak was snapped during Indianapolis' Week 14 win, and he's now been held without a touchdown in back-to-back contests after reaching the end zone Weeks 11 and 12. The Florida product remains dependent on the TD to deliver fantasy value, as he has just one outing of more than four receptions or 45 yards over his 10 appearances in 2020. During Week 15, he will face a Texans defense that is tied for 11th best in the NFL with five receiving TDs surrendered to opposing…read more

Reels in one pass
Burton had an 11-yard reception on three targets in Sunday's 26-20 win over the Texans.
Analysis: Burton failed to extend his touchdown streak to three games. He played just 25 snaps on offense, falling behind both Mo Alie-Cox (44) and Jack Doyle (38). Working in Burton's favor is nine red-zone targets over eight games, while Doyle and Alie-Cox have combined for seven in that stretch. Even with fewer snaps on a weekly basis, Burton appears to have more fantasy upside by virtue of his high-value targets.

Finds end zone again
Burton recorded three receptions on six targets for 42 yards and a touchdown in Week 12 against the Titans.
Analysis: Burton continued to out-produce both Jack Doyle and Mo Alie-Cox and was also the Colts' third-most targeted pass-catcher. His production came early on when he delivered a 12-yard reception on the team's first drive to move into the red zone. Three plays later, he hauled in a 12-yard touchdown for his fifth score of the campaign. Philip Rivers continues to spread targets to a wide array of pass-catchers, leaving Burton's volume unreliable on a weekly basis.

Scores TD against Packers
Burton had three receptions for 25 yards, including a 17-yard touchdown, on five targets in Sunday's win over Green Bay.
Analysis: While Burton scored a touchdown, he got less playing time among the team's three tight ends. Burton played on 24 of the offense's 84 snaps while Jack Doyle played on 45 snaps and Mo Alie-Cox played on 43 snaps. However, Burton did have more targets than the other two (Doyle had a TD catch on two targets, and Alie-Cox had two targets). Burton has four touchdowns as a red-zone threat, but it's hard to depend on any tight end's production with all three active in the passing game.

Just three receptions
Burton had three receptions for 14 yards on three targets in Thursday's win over Tennessee.
Analysis: Burton was thought to have a larger role with Jack Doyle out with a concussion, but he played on 37 of the offense's 70 snaps, which has been around the rate he's played each game. Despite starting at TE, he played less snaps and went out on fewer routes than Mo Alie-Cox. Burton did have a red-zone target, however. Indy's usage of the tight ends in the passing game has fluctuated each game, making Burton an unpredictable fantasy option despite scoring three touchdowns in six games.

Set for expanded role Thursday
Burton is expected to handle an increased role at tight end during Thursday's game against the Titans with Jack Doyle (concussion) ruled out for the contest, Kevin Bowen of 107.5 The Fan Indianapolis reports.
Analysis: Burton has drawn at least four targets in each of the five games he's appeared in this season. With Mo Alie-Cox (knee) also listed as questionable, Burton could have an even clearer path to handling the bulk of the snaps at tight end. At this point, Alie-Cox is probably more likely than not to play, but Doyle's absence should at least create a less messy timeshare between the two available options.

One catch against Ravens
Burton caught one of his four targets for six receiving yards during Sunday's 24-10 loss to Baltimore.
Analysis: Burton had recorded rushing touchdowns in consecutive outings entering Sunday afternoon's matchup, but the Colts elected against handing the tight end another rush attempt against Wink Martindale's defense. The Florida product enjoyed a brief stretch Weeks 5 and 6 in which he racked up nine receptions for 91 yards and one receiving touchdown, but Burton hasn't exceeded 16 receiving yards in any of his other three appearances this season. Scores another rushing TD
Burton caught three of four targets for nine yards and scored a two-yard rushing touchdown in Sunday's 41-21 win over the Lions.
Analysis: Burton is locked in a fierce competition for playing time at tight end with Jack Doyle, who caught a touchdown in this one, and Mo Alie-Cox. While it's hard to predict which of the three will shine as a receiver in any given week, Burton has carved out some value as a goal-line rushing option. For the second time in as many games, Burton's number was called on a direct snap from in close and he converted a short touchdown, so he could continue to be employed as a short-yardage rushing option…read more

Scores two TDs vs. Bengals
Burton caught four of five targets for 58 yards and a touchdown while adding a one-yard rushing score during Sunday's 31-27 win over the Bengals.
Analysis: Burton got his team on the board with a one-yard rushing score in the second quarter and scored a 10-yard receiving touchdown just a few minutes later. He finished second on the team in receiving yards while tying for third in receptions and fourth in targets. He's enjoyed a healthy 16 targets through three games this season and will look to continue his ascent in Week 8 against the Lions, though the team's upcoming bye could allow teammate Mo Alie-Cox (knee) to return from an injury.

Makes season-high five catches
Burton caught five of six targets for 33 yards during Sunday's 32-23 loss to the Browns.
Analysis: Burton surprisingly received the second-most targets on the team, and although he managed just 6.6 yards per catch, he clearly had the attention of Philip Rivers. He also received five targets in his season debut a week ago and seems to be carving himself out a role in the offense. Burton will look to continue his ascent next Sunday in a favorable matchup against the Bengals.

Five targets in season debut
Burton had two receptions for 16 yards on five targets in Sunday's win over Chicago.
Analysis: With injuries at wide receiver -- Parris Campbell and Michael Pittman are on IR -- the Colts utilized three tight ends in the passing game against the Bears. Mo Alie-Cox was a starter in a two-TE set with Jack Doyle. Alie-Cox played 33 of the offense's 72 snaps with Doyle playing 45 snaps and Burton playing 36 snaps. It was encouraging to see Burton lead the trio in targets in his first game back from a calf injury. However, the use of three tight ends in the offense likely limits his upside.

Activated off IR
Burton (calf) was activated from injured reserve Saturday and will play in Sunday's game against the Bears.
Analysis: It'll be interesting to see how the Colts deploy Burton with the emergence of Mo Alie-Cox alongside nominal starter Jack Doyle. A three-headed TE attack isn't out of the question either considering the numerous injuries to Colts pass catchers such as Parris Campbell (knee) and Michael Pittman (leg), but the more likely outcome is Burton simply easing back into the offense after missing the first three weeks of the season. Expect the snap counts to vary for each of the trio week to week.

Week 4 status TBD
Coach Frank Reich has not disclosed whether the Colts plan to activate Burton (calf) off IR before Sunday's game against the Bears, Jim Ayelloof The Indianapolis Star reports.
Analysis: The Colts have until Saturday to make the call on Burton, who resumed practicing this week. Even if he is activated, the presence of fellow tight ends Jack Doyle and Mo Alie-Cox likely ensures that Burton can be eased back into the team's pass-catching mix. Down the road, though, he'll look to rekindle the strong chemistry he developed with Philip Rivers during training camp.

Set to return to practice
Burton (calf) will return to practice Wednesday, Andrew Walker of the Colts' official site reports.
Analysis: Now that Burton is set the practice, the Colts will have a 21-day window to decide whether to add the tight end to their active roster or allow him to revert to IR for the rest of the season. With Jack Doyle and Mo Alie-Cox also in the mix, however, Burton's path to targets out of the gate would be unclear if he does end up being activated by the team.

Returning to practice
Coach Frank Reich said Monday that Burton (calf) will be back at practice this week, Kevin Bowen of 107.5 The Fan Indianapolis reports.
Analysis: The 28-year-old has been sidelined by a calf injury since late August and was moved to injured reserve ahead of Week 1. Burton is eligible to be activated after spending the three-week minimum on injured reserve, but he may not be game ready for the Week 4 matchup with the Bears after being sidelined for the past month.

Heading to injured reserve
The Colts placed Burton (calf) on injured reserve Monday.
Analysis: Burton sustained a calf injury Aug. 29, after which coach Frank Reich said it's an issue that takes "generally more than two weeks" to recover from. Now more than a week in the future, Burton will be given the rest of the month to get healthy before the Colts can consider activating him from IR. Since he won't suit up until Oct. 4 at Chicago at the earliest, Jack Doyle (neck), Mo Alie-Cox and Noah Togiai will compose the team's options at tight end in the meantime.

Could land on IR
Head coach Frank Reich may place Burton (calf) on injured reserve to begin the year, Andrew Walker of the Colts' official site reports.
Analysis: The Colts don't expect Burton to play in the first couple of games this year, and with the new IR rules, he could be placed on IR and return after just three weeks. That may be the most practical outcome for the team's roster construction, as it claimed Noah Togiai off waivers to add depth to its tight-end room that now has four occupants. Burton is expected to miss at least the first couple of games of the coming season, Mike Chappell of Fox 59 News Indianapolis reports.
Analysis: With Burton not in the mix to start the season, added targets will be available for Jack Doyle, as well as Mo Alie-Cox and Xavier Grimble to a lesser degree. At this point, Week 3's matchup against the Jets seems to be the soonest we'll see Burton suit up for a game with the Colts.

Could miss some time
Burton is still being evaluated, but it sounds like he's probably going to miss some time due to the calf injury he suffered during Saturday's scrimmage, Andrew Walker of the Colts' official site reports.
Analysis: With that in mind, coach Frank Reich noted Monday that calf injuries typically "can range in a number of weeks," adding that the team is "still kind of waiting on it to settle down for a day or two to really get a better gauge to how long it may be" for the tight end. Reich went on to say "I can tell you those types of things are generally more than two weeks if you get it and get it good, but we will just have to see how it settles down here over the next couple of days." Set for MRI
Burton will undergo a MRI after suffering a calf injury in Saturday's practice, Kevin Bowen of 107.5 The Fan Indianapolis reports.
Analysis: Coach Frank Reich seemed to think the injury would only require "a little bit of time" to heal, which seems somewhat sketchy considering Burton is still slated for a MRI, but for now the injury is being classified as a calf strain. Jack Doyle has been participating in practice off and on over the past few weeks due to a neck injury, so the Colts are perilously thin when it comes to quality depth at the TE position.

Burton was removed from Saturday's practice after suffering a lower-body injury, Stephen Holder of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: The team has yet to reveal what type of injury Burton might have suffered, but he was unable to put any weight on his leg and was helped off the field. The Colts were already without Jack Doyle (neck), who has been missing practices sporadically with a neck injury, leaving just unproven names such as Mo Alie-Cox, Xavier Grimble and Andrew Vollert to shoulder most of the starting TE reps.

Expecting part-time role
Burton acknowledged Tuesday that he'll likely play fewer snaps for the Colts than he did during his two seasons with the Bears, Joel A. Erickson of The Indianapolis Star reports.
Analysis: Coach Frank Reich and offensive coordinator Nick Sirianni expect Burton to be a significant part of their offense, with the 28-year-old perhaps replacing Jack Doyle in obvious passing situations. Burton handled an 80 percent snap share in 2018 for the Bears before dropping to 57 percent during his injury-plagued 2019 campaign, eventually undergoing hip labrum surgery in December. Coach Frank Reich and offensive coordinator Nick Sirianni have both recently said that they expect Burton (hip) to be a big part of the Indianapolis offense, Joel A. Erickson of The Indianapolis Star reports.

Should be healthy this summer

Analysis: In other words, he isn't ready for medical clearance but expects it to happen at some point this summer. The 28-year-old tight end was cut by the Bears last week and signed by the Colts a few days later, thus reuniting with head coach Frank Reich, who served as offensive coordinator for the final two of Burton's four years with the Eagles. The Colts and Burton (hip) agreed to a contract Wednesday, Field Yates of ESPN reports.
Analysis: Burton has managed just eight appearances since injuring himself in advance of the Bears' wild-card loss to the Eagles in January 2019. Since that game, he's undergone sports hernia surgery, dealt with a calf issue and had another procedure to deal with a labrum injury in his hip. Let go by Bears
The Bears will release Burton (hip), Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Analysis: Burton, who is bouncing back from an offseason procedure on his hip, became expendable when the Bears signed Jimmy Graham. The 28-year-old thus enters free agency as an option for teams looking to add tight end depth, with the Patriots representing a potential fit. Burton caught 54 passes with Chicago in 2018, but his production dipped to 14 catches for 84 yards in eight games last year.

Should be ready for camp
Burton (hip) is still rehabbing and remains on track to return for training camp, Jeff Dickerson of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Burton struggled to get back to full strength after sports hernia surgery last offseason, catching 14 passes in eight games during the 2019 campaign before undergoing hip labrum surgery in December. The need for surgery kicked in a guarantee that covers $4 million of his $6.7 million base salary for 2020, but it won't come as any surprise if Burton is cut or traded before Week 1, considering the Bears signed fellow tight end Jimmy Graham to a two-year, $16 million contract in mid-March.

The Bears announced Tuesday that Burton recently underwent hip surgery to address a labrum injury, Adam Hoge of WGN Radio 720 AM Chicago reports. Burton is expected to make a full recovery in advance of training camp.
Analysis: Burton was limited to just eight appearances in 2019 before being placed on injured reserve due to a calf issue, but he's apparently still being bothered by the groin/hip injury he suffered shortly before the playoffs a year ago. While the tight end underwent a sports-hernia procedure last offseason, he's hoping that hip surgery will provide a more permanent fix. Placed on IR
The Bears placed Burton (calf) on injured reserve Saturday, James Palmer of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: Burton's 2019 season will come to a premature end. He will finish with just 14 receptions for 84 yards in eight games. Adam Shaheen (foot) has already been ruled out for the Bears' Week 11 matchup with the Rams, but he figures to be the team's No. 1 tight end for the rest of the year. Ruled out, along with Shaheen
Burton (calf) and Adam Shaheen (foot) have both been ruled out for Sunday's game against the Rams.
Analysis: The Bears are left with Ben Braunecker, J.P. Holtz and Bradley Sowell at tight end, a position where they've received minimal production in the passing game. Braunecker recorded a touchdown catch in last week's 20-13 win over Detroit, but it was only his 10th reception in 45 NFL games. The Bears likely will use some form of rotation come Sunday night. Analysis: Burton emerged from a Week 10 win against the Lions with a calf injury, which has kept him off the practice field so far this week. Burton sustained a calf injury during Sunday's game against the Lions, Patrick Finley of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.

Held catchless
Burton failed to corral his only target in Chicago's 22-14 loss to the Eagles on Sunday.
Analysis: In a game that Mitchell Trubisky threw just 21 passes, there were very few targets to go around, and as a result, Burton wasn't a factor. On the season, he's averaging two receptions for 12 yards while not scoring a touchdown, and unless he turns things around, he's not a player who can be trusted in fantasy lineups.
