Plays workhorse role in win
Montgomery rushed 20 times for 86 yards and failed to secure his only target in the Bears' 31-24 win over the Cowboys on Thursday. He also lost a fumble.
Analysis: Montgomery hit the 20-carry mark for only the third time this season, as he was leaned on more than usual in the latter stages of the fourth quarter with the Bears trying to ice the game. The rookie has been productive over his last pair of contests after a pair of lackluster outings in Weeks 11 and 12, as he's garnered 161 rushing yards on 36 carries against the Lions and Cowboys. He'll look to play a significant role again in a Week 15 divisional battle versus the Packers a week from Sunday.

Compiles 87 total yards, TD in win
Montgomery rushed 16 times for 75 yards and secured both of his targets for 12 yards and a touchdown in the Bears' 24-20 win over the Lions on Thursday.
Analysis: Montgomery turned in a workman-like effort on the ground, with his long run of the day going for a modest 14 yards. He also delivered through the air when it mattered most, notching what would turn out to be a game-winning three-yard touchdown reception with 2:17 remaining. Montgomery's rushing yardage tally served as his second highest of the season, and he'll look to build on those numbers versus the Cowboys in a Week 14 Thursday night home matchup.

Disappointing performance
Montgomery rushed 13 times for 22 yards and caught two passes for nine yards in the Bears' 19-14 victory over the Giants on Sunday.
Analysis: Even though he appeared fully recovered from the ankle injury that limited him last week, he continued to split work fairly equally with Tarik Cohen, and aside from a 13-yard run, Montgomery was unable to generate much yardage after contact. Despite his poor performance, this was the first time in five games that he failed to post at least 50 yards from scrimmage, and he should be considered a low-end starting option for fantasy managers.

Does little with 15 touches
Montgomery (ankle) carried the ball 14 times for 31 yards and caught one pass (three targets) for 19 yards in Sunday's 17-7 loss to the Rams.
Analysis: Montgomery was a game-time decision after rolling his ankle at practice earlier this week, but he was able to suit up and lead the team in carries. Unfortunately for his fantasy owners, the rookie was unable to do much against the Rams' stout interior defensive line, and he may have also been feeling the affects of the balky ankle. Despite the dud, Montgomery has been averaging 18 carries over his last four contests, and he will have a chance to feast against the Giants -- which allow 122.7…read more

Available Week 11
Montgomery (ankle) is active for Sunday's game against the Rams at L.A., Jason Lieser of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.
Analysis: Montgomery rolled his ankle at Wednesday's practice, inducing the Bears to hold him out Thursday before he returned Friday as a limited participant. Considered a game-time decision by coach Matt Nagy, Montgomery must have appeased the team's medical and training staffs enough to get the all-clear. It's unclear if Montgomery will handle his typical workload, but Tarik Cohen and Ryan Nall are on hand in the event he cannot.

Headed for game-time call
Montgomery (ankle) will be a game-time decision Sunday night against the Rams, Nathan Smith of the Bears' official site reports. "It was good to get him back out there and just kind of see where he's at," coach Matt Nagy said after Friday's practice. "He's gonna end up being a game-time decision for us."
Analysis: Montgomery was held out of Thursday's practice after he injured his ankle Wednesday. The return to a limited session Friday sets him up as truly questionable, with Tarik Cohen and Ryan Nall the alternate options in Chicago's backfield. An 8:20 p.m. ET kickoff creates issues for fantasy managers, and there's no assurance of a full workload even if Montgomery ends up playing. It's a brutal matchup in any case, with the Rams limiting backs to 3.6 yards per carry (fourth-best) and allowing the…read more

Deemed questionable for SNF
Montgomery (ankle) returned to practice Friday as a limited participant and is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Rams, Rich Campbell of the Chicago Tribune reports.
Analysis: This has all the makings of a frustrating situation for fantasy managers, with Montgomery appearing truly questionable for a game that kicks off at 8:20 p.m. ET. He was listed as a limited participant Wednesday when he initially hurt his ankle during practice, before downgrading to no activity Thursday. The return to a limited session Friday suggests he has a real chance to play, with Tarik Cohen and Ryan Nall on hand in the event of an absence. The Bears waived Mike Davis last week, eating…read more

DNP on Thursday
Montgomery (ankle) didn't practice Thursday.
Analysis: Montgomery made a surprise appearance on the Bears' first Week 11 injury report as a limited participant. The reason become clear Thursday, when coach Matt Nagy relayed Montgomery "lightly" rolled his ankle at Wednesday's session, per Rich Campbell of the Chicago Tribune. As a result, Montgomery's lack of reps Thursday is concerning, giving him just one more chance to get in some work before the weekend. If he's limited or even absent Sunday against the Rams in L.A., Tarik Cohen and Ryan Nall…read more

Week 11 status in question
Coach Matt Nagy said that Montgomery "lightly" rolled an ankle during Wednesday's practice, leaving the running back's availability uncertain for this weekend's game against the Rams, Rich Campbell of the Chicago Tribune reports.
Analysis: Nagy's comments provide an explanation for why Montgomery was surprisingly listed as a limited participant Wednesday in the Bears' first practice of the week. It's uncertain whether the rookie will be able to resume practicing Thursday and/or Friday, but his ability to bounce back from the ankle sprain over the next couple of days will likely have significant sway on his status for the weekend. If Montgomery -- who has played at least 60 percent of the offensive snaps in each of the last three…read more

Limited by ankle issue
Montgomery was limited at Wednesday's practice due to an ankle injury.
Analysis: Since seeing a season-low four touches Week 7 against the Saints, Montgomery has bounced back over the last three games, racking up 65 touches for 283 yards and three touchdowns. With the lead role locked down ahead of change-of-pace back Tarik Cohen, Montgomery has become the most consistent option in the Bears offense, but the aforementioned health concern could throw a wrench into that development.

Disappointing afternoon
Montgomery carried 17 times for 60 yards in the Bears' 20-13 win over the Lions on Sunday.
Analysis: Despite what appeared to be a cupcake matchup, Montgomery was never given a chance to get into a groove. Even when the Bears got the ball deep in enemy territory, it was Tarik Cohen who was given the red-zone screen pass for a touchdown. When Chicago established a commanding lead late in the third quarter, it was disappointing that Montgomery wasn't given the consistent carries that could've propelled him to a much bigger performance. Finds end zone twice
Montgomery rushed 14 times for 40 yards and two touchdowns and caught three passes for 36 yards in Chicago's 22-14 loss to the Eagles on Sunday.
Analysis: Montgomery had just a single yard at the half, but once the Bears were trailing by double digits, the offense started to move the ball better, and he was able to punch in two of his three goal-line carries in to help get Chicago back into the game. He was mostly shut down on the majority of his touches, but a 17-yard run and a 30-yard reception accounted for almost half of his scrimmage yards. For the first time this season, he's put together back-to-back useful fantasy performances, and his…read more

Breaks century mark
Montgomery carried 27 times for 135 yards and a touchdown while catching four passes for 12 yards in the Bears' 17-16 loss to the Chargers on Sunday.
Analysis: Montgomery had a season-high 27 rushing attempts, and he took full advantage of a Los Angeles defense that was without both starting defensive tackles. In the first half, he had three carries from inside the five-yard line but was stopped on each attempt. However, on his first red-zone attempt of the second half, he ran up the middle for a four-yard score. This was the first time all season that he had more than 67 rushing yards, and although this performance gives fantasy owners hope, he may…read more

Should be more involved on ground
Coach Matt Nagy plans to lean more heavily on Montgomery and the running game Sunday against the Chargers after the Bears logged only seven carries in the Week 7 loss to the Saints, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: Even though the Saints turned last week's game into a runaway in the third quarter and forced the Bears to play catchup, the team's seven carries were still a remarkably low total even after accounting for the game script. Perhaps in response to the imbalanced play calling and the poor results it yielded, Nagy wants to "run the heck out of the ball" versus Los Angeles, according to Rapoport. If that's the case, Montgomery would stand to benefit the most, though he hasn't exactly been efficient…read more

Disappointing performance
Montgomery carried twice for six yards and caught two passes for 13 yards in the Bears' 36-25 loss to the Saints on Sunday.
Analysis: Montgomery saw little work, even when this game was close throughout the first half. When he was given his first carry in the third quarter, he fumbled the football away, which put the Bears in a hole out of which they couldn't climb. After having reached at least 67 combined yards in three straight games, he's failed to reach 40 yards in either of his last two contests, and unless the Bears figure out their offensive woes, Montgomery will have a low weekly scoring floor.

Finds end zone
Montgomery rushed 11 times for 25 yards and a touchdown with an 11-yard reception in the Bears' 24-21 loss to the Raiders on Sunday.
Analysis: Although this appeared as if it could've been a breakout spot for Montgomery, the Bears fell behind 17-0 at the half and as a result, the Bears mostly abandoned the running game. As a result, Tarik Cohen saw more field time than Montgomery. At least when he was given a chance for a goal-line carry, Montgomery converted to keep his fantasy day from being a complete disaster. He'll be on the bye next week, and when he returns Week 7, he'll continue to be a volume-based fantasy option.

Logs 24 touches
Montgomery rushed 21 times for 53 yards while adding three receptions for 14 yards in the Bears' 16-6 win over the Vikings on Sunday.
Analysis: Montgomery did not dominate touches for the Bears in the first half while the game was close, as Tarik Cohen was heavily involved in the game plan. However, once the Bears took control of the game early in the second half, he then became the primary runner, though his production was slowed by a stout Minnesota defense. He's now carried the ball at least 13 times in three-straight games, and his volume makes him a solid second starting running back option.

Tops 80 scrimmage yards
Montgomery rushed 13 times for 67 yards and caught all three of his targets for 14 yards in Monday night's 31-15 win over the Redskins.
Analysis: Montgomery was corralled fairly well prior to breaking off a 25-yard run during the fourth quarter. That carry, which marked the rookie's longest through three games, helped Montgomery post his best yardage total to date. With added value from three receptions as well, it was a decent night for Montgomery, even though the Bears passing for two touchdowns inside the three-yard line robbed him of a couple potential scoring opportunities from in close.

Takes lead role
Montgomery rushed 18 times for 62 yards and a touchdown while adding a reception for an additional six yards in the Bears 16-14 victory over the Broncos on Sunday.
Analysis: After being criminally misused in Week 1 when Mike Davis easily out-touched the rookie, coach Matt Nagy didn't make the same mistake in this contest. Although the Broncos consistently hit Montgomery at or near the line of scrimmage, he frequently was able to break tackles to gain yardage. On a late third-quarter drive, he was given five carries within a six-play span when the ball was inside Denver's five-yard line, and on the last play, he fought through tackles before finally stretching the…read more

Factored out by game conditions
Montgomery rushed six times for 18 yards and brought in his only target for 27 yards in the Bears' 10-3 loss to the Packers on Thursday.
Analysis: The rookie's much-anticipated regular-season debut left much to be desired in terms of his final line, but the blame could hardly be placed at the talented feet of Montgomery. The Iowa State product ran decisively on his few carries despite dealing with stacked fronts, showing off the tackle-breaking acumen that became a signature during his college career. Montgomery also displayed his ability in space on his 27-yard reception in the third quarter that took the ball down to the Packers'…read more

Sitting out Saturday
Montgomery isn't expected to suit up for Saturday's preseason game at Indianapolis, Dan Wiederer of the Chicago Tribune reports.
Analysis: The same can be said for fellow running backs Tarik Cohen and Mike Davis. Once Week 1 rolls around, Montgomery seems to be the leader for early down work out of the backfield, with Davis serving as his primary competition. Meanwhile, Cohen is slated for his usual change-of-pace role.

Not suiting up Friday
Montgomery isn't expected to play in Friday's preseason contest versus the Giants.
Analysis: Montgomery got a fair amount of work during the Bears' exhibition opener, taking three carries for 16 yards and a TD and hauling in three passes for 30 yards. While Montgomery theoretically has some competition for early-down reps in the form of Mike Davis, he may not get another chance to suit up before the regular season if coach Matt Nagy has his way. Look for Montgomery to get plenty of work once Week 1 rolls around.

Impresses in preseason debut
Montgomery rushed three times for 16 yards and a touchdown and caught all three of his targets for 30 yards in Thursday night's 23-13 preseason loss to the Panthers.
Analysis: Montgomery showed just why there's significant hype surrounding him ahead of his rookie campaign. Not only did he display his open-field ability on a 23-yard catch during the second quarter, but he capped that same drive with a seven-yard touchdown scamper. Although veteran tailback Mike Davis got the start, his three rushes for nine yards in a target-free outing certainly left Montgomery as Chicago's most impressive performer at the position, adding more steam to his preseason stock.

Viewed as whole package
Matt Nagy has been impressed by Montgomery's hands, route running and ability to make defenders miss, Dan Wiederer of the Chicago Tribune reports.
Analysis: Nagy went on to explain that Montgomery extends runs with power, and his peripheral vision gives him a feel for when the next defender is coming, which helps him make defenders miss. In addition, the coach used the word "savvy" when describing the rookie's route running, and when these elements are put together, it's clear why the Bears felt the need to trade up to acquire him in the draft. For Nagy's offense, it's important to have a player like Montgomery in the backfield because defenses…read more

Headed for busy preseason
Coach Matt Nagy said Montgomery will get "a fair amount of carries" in preseason games, Larry Mayer of the Bears' official site reports.
Analysis: With Tarik Cohen locked in on passing downs, the Bears need to figure out how they'll divide the remaining backfield snaps between Montgomery and Mike Davis. The team invested significant resources in both players, with the veteran Davis signing a two-year, $6 million contract that includes $3 million guaranteed, and the rookie from Iowa State requiring a third-round pick at No. 73 overall. A strong showing during training camp and the preseason could put Montgomery in the lead role, a job that…read more
