Snags first career reception
Nauta caught one pass for three yards during Sunday's 20-7 loss to Minnesota.
Analysis: Nauta caught his first career pass, but it was only good for a handful of yards. Moreover, the rookie somehow saw less snaps than he has either of the past two games despite T.J. Hockenson (ankle) landing on injured reserve this past week.

Serving as fourth-string tight end
Nauta logged seven offensive snaps and wasn't targeted during Thursday's 24-20 loss to Chicago.
Analysis: Nauta made some nice plays as a lead blocker but the majority of his playing time came on special teams, which will likely remain the case as long as T.J. Hockenson, Jesse James and Logan Thomas are healthy enough to play. However, Hockenson might have picked up a leg injury in addition to his pre-exisiting shoulder injury during Thursday's loss. If the first-round rookie is forced to miss time with the Lions now out of playoff contention, it's possible Nauta, a seventh-round pick, could get…read more

Makes regular-season debut
Nauta logged 10 offensive snaps but was not targeted during Sunday's 19-16 loss to Washington.
Analysis: Nauta was signed to the active roster in the aftermath of T.J. Hockenson's sudden appearance on the injury report with a shoulder injury. While he wasn't asked to do much offensively, Nauta could stick around on the active roster as long as Hockenson is operating at less than 100 percent.

Joins Detroit
Nauta was signed to the Lions' 53-man roster Saturday.
Analysis: The versatile tight end is expected to be a contributor on special teams, but with the likes of T.J. Hockenson, Jesse James and Logan Thomas all above him on the depth chart, it's unlikely Nauta sees many offensive snaps.

Added to Detroit's practice squad
Nauta was signed to Detroit's practice squad Sunday, Justin Rogers of the Detroit News reports.
Analysis: Nauta was part of final roster cuts over the weekend after losing out to Logan Thomas for the No. 3 job at tight end. The rookie is likely on speed dial in case anything happens to Thomas, T.J. Hockenson or Jesse James.

Cut by Lions
Nauta was waived by the Lions, Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press reports.
Analysis: Nauta was never able to catch up to Logan Thomas in the battle for the No. 3 tight end job and, despite a somewhat impressive preseason for Nauta, the Lions ultimately decided against rostering a fourth tight end on the final 53-man roster. Detroit is probably hoping it can stash him on its practice squad.

Finds end zone in preseason
Nauta secured all three of his targets for 45 yards and a touchdown during Thursday's preseason finale against the Browns.
Analysis: Josh Johnson threw a dime to Nauta on a corner route that ended with the rookie slipping into the end zone for a 20-yard score. While he got shaken up and needed to be escorted off the field at one point, it was a nice overall day for the seventh-rounder and he'll now have to hold his breath to find out if he did enough for Detroit to keep a fourth tight end on the roster. Working in Nauta's favor is that he can serve in a number of roles as more of an H-back.

Makes preseason debut
Nauta was targeted once but did not record a catch during Thursday's preseason opener against the Patriots.
Analysis: Nauta worked through a rehab regimen during spring workouts, but his availability for the preseason opener confirms he's healthy. While he wasn't able to bring down the only pass sent his way Thursday, Nauta made a solid block on a run play that helped spring running back Ty Johnson for a 17-yard gain. It's possible his potential as a receiver could be put more on display during the remaining preseason games.

Headed for H-back role
Nauta (undisclosed) is headed for an H-back role, Chris Burke of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Nauta (6-foot-3, 244 pounds) is a former five-star tight end recruit with the athleticism to catch, block, and generally move with the ball well in space. While Logan Thomas seemingly made a strong case for the No. 3 job at tight end during spring practices, he might not actually be Nauta's primary competition for a roster spot. Instead, that title could belong to fullback Nick Bawden (knee), who's coming off a 2018 season lost to a torn ACL. Considering both Nauta and Bawden avoided the…read more
