Caps record-setting rookie year
Herbert completed 22 of 31 pass attempts for 302 yards and three touchdowns in Sunday's 38-21 win over the Chiefs. He also carried the ball six times for nine yards and an additional score.
Analysis: Herbert ends the season with NFL rookie records for most passing touchdowns (31), most total touchdowns (36), most completions (396), most 300-yard games (eight) and most games with multiple passing touchdowns (10). He was also 39 yards shy of setting the single-season record for most passing yards by a rookie. Those accolades become all the more impressive when considering the 22-year-old started only 15 games, losing out the training-camp battle to veteran Tyrod Taylor before an unfortunate…read more

Sets rookie TD record
Herbert completed 21 of 33 passes for 253 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 19-16 win over the Broncos. He added 26 rushing yards on four carries.
Analysis: His second-quarter toss to Austin Ekeler for a nine-yard TD made history, as Herbert broke Baker Mayfield's rookie record for touchdown passes with his 28th of the season. Herbert may not be done re-writing the NFL's record book, either -- he needs just six more completions to break Carson Wentz's rookie record of 379 and 341 passing yards to break Andrew Luck's rookie record in that category. The Chargers phenom will take aim at both marks in Week 17's road clash with a Kansas City team that…read more

Plays hero again in win
Herbert completed 22 of 32 passes for 314 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions in the Chargers' 30-27 overtime win over the Raiders on Thursday night.
Analysis: He also rushed four times for 14 yards and a game-winning score, committing a fumble on the play prior to that, which was recovered by fullback Gabe Nabers. The rookie QB had been in somewhat of a yardage slump by his lofty standards, as he'd fallen short of the 300-yard mark in two straight games after eclipsing the figure in six of his first 10 career contests. However, a back-and-forth affair that culminated in an extra period offered the 22-year-old just enough opportunity to get back to a…read more

Leads last-second win
Herbert completed 36 of 44 attempts for 243 yards, two touchdowns and one interception in Sunday's 20-17 win over the Falcons.
Analysis: An injury to Mike Williams (back) early in the contest forced the Chargers to turn their offense into a dink and dunk system to little success as Austin Ekeler and Keenan Allen absorbed 20 targets between the two players. Herbert appeared to throw a back-breaking interception with 53 seconds left in the contest and the Chargers near the midfield mark, but his defense came up with a pick just three plays later to set up the rookie's first game-winning drive of his career. Despite a bit of an…read more

Struggles in loss to Patriots
Herbert completed 26 of 53 pass attempts for 209 yards and two interceptions during Sunday's 45-0 loss to the Patriots.
Analysis: Herbert completed less than half of his pass attempts and averaged a dismal 3.9 yards per attempt. He threw interceptions on back-to-back drives to start the third quarter with his team down big and failed to throw a touchdown pass for the first time in his young career. Herbert had an excellent 8:2 TD:INT over his previous four games and should bounce back next Sunday in an inviting matchup with the Falcons.

Inefficient in loss
Herbert converted 31 of his 52 pass attempts for 316 yards, one touchdown and one interception in Sunday's 27-17 loss to the Bills.
Analysis: Herbert was able to benefit from a junk-time drive that nearly yielded a touchdown despite horrendous clock management. The end result saw the rookie post his sixth game with at least 300 passing yards and a touchdown, but the gaudy yardage total masked what was an overall lackluster effort from the Chargers offense. The rookie relied heavily on the newly healthy Austin Ekeler (hamstring) as opposed to Keenan Allen or Mike Williams, but that might have been by design thanks to the Bills'…read more

Produces three TDs vs. Jets
Herbert completed 37 of 49 pass attempts for 366 yards and three touchdowns while adding 11 yards on three rushing attempts during Sunday's 36-28 win over the Jets.
Analysis: Herbert completed 76 percent of his attempts and completed passes to eight different receivers en route to the highest yardage total of his young career. He completed touchdown passes to Mike Williams, Hunter Henry and Keenan Allen, making him the first rookie in NFL history with multiple touchdown tosses in seven straight games. Herbert is quickly becoming an elite fantasy option on a weekly basis and is capable of putting up big numbers despite a tricky cross-country trip to Buffalo coming up…read more

Less than stellar in loss
Herbert connected on 20 of 32 attempts for 187 yards and two touchdowns while throwing one pick in Sunday's 29-21 loss to the Dolphins. He added 10 yards and a touchdown on the ground.
Analysis: Herbert was able to pile on some junk-time production late, but it was an overall mundane performance in the battle of rookie QBs. A bevy of inaccurate throws stalled the Chargers' offense all game long, but the final nail in the coffin came when Herbert stared down his intended target early in the fourth quarter and threw a drive-ending interception, setting up the Dolphins for an easy touchdown to take a two-score lead. A fairly run-oriented approach from both sides kept the passing…read more

Comeback attempt falls short
Herbert completed 28 of 42 passes for 326 yards and two touchdowns in Sunday's 31-26 loss to the Raiders. He also carried the ball five times for 24 yards.
Analysis: It was another fantastic fantasy performance for the young quarterback, but it's certainly a disappointing outcome overall considering the Chargers had two attempts to score the game-winning touchdown inside the 10 yard line only to come away empty in yet another tragically disappointing loss. Keenan Allen continues to build a rapport with Herbert, but it's especially encouraging to see the No. 6 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft continue to target Mike Williams, with whom he connected on five…read more

Healthy for Sunday
Coach Anthony Lynn downplayed Herbert's appearance on the injury report this week, saying the quarterback is merely dealing with normal soreness, Daniel Popper of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Herbert was listed with a right shoulder injury Thursday and Friday, logging full practices both days. The Chargers aren't concerned, so he should be good to go this Sunday against a Raiders defense that's given up the ninth-most fantasy points to quarterbacks. Herbert is averaging 303.3 passing yards and 2.8 total TDs per game, consistently putting up good numbers.

Makes key mistake in loss
Herbert completed 29 of 43 pass attempts for 278 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions in Week 8 against Denver. He added three rush attempts for 21 yards.
Analysis: Herbert continued to show the ability to move the Chargers' offense effectively, accounting for three or more touchdowns for his fourth consecutive start. He's also topped 275 yards through the air in five of his first six starts as a professional. Herbert's effort was highlighted by a number of deep passes to Mike Williams, including connections of 26, 24 and 19 yards. However, Herbert also made a few errors -- it was his first multi-interception game -- including an interception late in the…read more

Explosive effort earns first win
Herbert completed 27 of 43 pass attempts for 347 yards and three touchdowns during Sunday's 39-29 win over the Jaguars. He also had nine carries for 66 yards and a score.
Analysis: Herbert had arguably the sloppiest first half of his young career Sunday, but he rallied back to notch a season-best mark in terms of passing yards while logging his second straight game with four scores. He also showcased his athleticism on the ground, setting more career-high tallies in terms of both rushing yards and carries. Through five starts, Herbert now boasts a 12:3 TD:INT ratio through the air, an exceptional mark that's come in large part due to his chemistry with favorite target…read more

Throws four TDs in loss
Herbert completed 20 of 34 passes for 264 yards and four touchdowns in Monday night's 30-27 overtime loss to the Saints.
Analysis: Herbert showed exactly why the Chargers named him their starter going forward, flashing a combination of athleticism and playmaking in the passing game. The rookie began by finding Keenan Allen on a 17-yard score, and even though his top target subsequently exited with a back injury, Herbert still tossed three touchdowns by halftime. While that tally included scores from just three and four yards, Herbert hit Mike Williams with a 64-yard pass on his fourth score. That play put Los Angeles in a…read more

Will remain starter
Chargers head coach Anthony Lynn said Thursday that Herbert will serve as the team's starting quarterback moving forward, Gilbert Manzano of The Orange County Register reports.
Analysis: The decision, which comes in advance of Monday's game against the Saints, is a reversal of Lynn's previous stance, as the coach originally indicated that Week 1 starter Tyrod Taylor (ribs/chest) wouldn't lose his job due to an injury. Herbert's impressive play while filling in for Taylor forced Lynn's hand, however, and the rookie will now assume the position the Chargers had in mind for him when they selected him sixth overall in the 2020 NFL Draft.

Another strong showing in loss
Herbert completed 20 of 25 passes for 291 yards with three touchdowns and one interception in the Chargers' 38-31 loss to the Buccaneers on Sunday. He also rushed five times for 14 yards.
Analysis: The rookie nearly eclipsed the 300-yard mark for the third time in as many starts to open his career, with a pretty 72-yard touchdown pass to Jalen Guyton in the fourth quarter helping him come tantalizingly close. While he ultimately fell short, Herbert once again looked very comfortable against a solid defense, and he was able to thrive most of the afternoon despite being without key deep threat Mike Williams (hamstring). Herbert's one interception was especially ill-timed, however, as it…read more

Can't quite complete comeback
Herbert completed 35 of 49 passes for 330 yards and a touchdown along with an interception in the 21-16 loss Sunday to the Panthers. He also lost a fumble.
Analysis: Herbert was strip sacked on the team's second possession, setting up an uphill battle all afternoon for the rookie. Herbert looked poised throughout most of the contest, and he rebounded from an erratic first half to help the Chargers make a last ditch come-from-behind drive that could have been successful if Austin Ekeler hadn't botched a hook-and-ladder attempt that would have scored the game-winning touchdown. Keenan Allen and Hunter Henry were Herbert's primary targets in the middle of the…read more

Week 3 start confirmed
Coach Anthony Lynn confirmed that Herbert will start Sunday's game against the Panthers, Daniel Popper of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Herbert will pick up a second straight start after reports surfaced Wednesday that Tyrod Taylor suffered a punctured lung prior to kickoff in the Chargers' overtime loss to the Chiefs in Week 2. Per Popper, Lynn said that the Chargers haven't considered placing Taylor on injured reserve, the team won't take any chances with the veteran signal-caller Week 3, given that he's understandably not 100 percent. Taylor will presumably be officially ruled out by the end of the week, while Herbert will…read more

Expected to draw Week 3 start
Herbert is expected to start Sunday's game against the Panthers, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: Per Adam Schefter of ESPN, doctors have advised Tyrod Taylor not to play "indefinitely" due to a punctured lung that he suffered after receiving a pain-killing injection prior to kickoff Week 2. Though Herbert filled in admirably in the Chargers' 23-20 overtime loss to the Chiefs, coach Anthony Lynn previously indicated that Taylor wouldn't lose his starting job to an injury, and there had been some initial hope the veteran would return to action Week 3. Wednesday's news, however, sets the…read more

May start again Week 3
Herbert could be in store for a second straight start Week 3 against the Panthers with the Chargers listing incumbent Tyrod Taylor (chest) as week-to-week, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Analysis: Herbert was informed just moments before kickoff in Sunday's game against the Chiefs that he would be starting when Taylor was scratched and sent to the hospital after experiencing an adverse reaction to an pregame injection he took to address a lingering rib injury, according to Mike Garafolo of NFL Network. Considering the circumstances, Herbert performed impressively, completing 22 of his 33 pass attempts for 311 yards, one touchdown and an interception to go with 18 yards and another score…read more

Impresses in NFL debut
Herbert completed 22 of 33 passes for 311 yards with a touchdown and an interception while rushing for 18 yards and a TD on four carries in Sunday's 23-20 overtime loss to Kansas City.
Analysis: Thrust into the starting lineup ahead of schedule when Tyrod Taylor reported chest pains during pregame warmups and had to be sent to the hospital, Herbert very nearly led the Chargers to an upset of the reigning champs. The sixth overall pick in this year's draft looked poised in leading his team to a 14-6 lead at halftime before Patrick Mahomes launched a late comeback. According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, coach Anthony Lynn said after the game that Taylor would handle starting duties if…read more

Surprise Week 2 starter
Herbert started Sunday's game against the Chiefs, Tom Krasovic of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
Analysis: This surprising development is the result of Tyrod Taylor being listed as questionable by the Chargers with a chest injury. It remains to be seen if Taylor is able to enter the game at any point, but Herbert -- the No. 6 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft -- will have a chance to helm his team's offense in the meantime.

Little playing time set for 2020
Herbert isn't expected to start many games for the Chargers as a rookie, Daniel Popper of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Popper alluded to a recent segment on HBO's "Hard Knocks," which featured Herbert acknowledging a bit of a learning curve as he makes the jump from college to the NFL. Tyrod Taylor is more or less slated to start every game this season thanks to the "catching up" the rookie still needs to do. That sentiment has essentially been accepted as fact throughout most of the Chargers' training camp, although it's still worth noting Herbert's athletic tools pose significantly more upside for the offense…read more

Inks rookie deal
Herbert signed his rookie contract with the Chargers on Saturday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: The No. 6 overall pick of the 2020 NFL Draft will receive $26.6 million fully guaranteed over four seasons, plus a fifth-year option. Tyrod Taylor is expected to start with the departure of longtime-Charger Philip Rivers, especially since the COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in an offseason of minimal team activities that will make it more difficult for rookies to acclimate. Still, Herbert could take the reins at some point in 2020 if Taylor struggles or gets injured.
